November 4-6, 2009 – Annual GWN Regional Mayors Gathering

Cross border mayors meeting, Amman
cross border mayors meeting, Amman

This year’s Mayor’s conference brought together mayors, other community leaders and active residents from the 25 GWN participating communities to take part in discussions on shared water issues.

Participants were divided into three groups based on geographic / watershed orientation (Jordan Valley, Dead Sea, Mountain Aquifer), with short video clips that preceded main topics for discussions: “Why Cooperate?”; “My Neighbors Water Reality”; and “Influencing Decision Makers”. Read a summary of these sessions here.

The aim was to share and discuss the role of communities in the region’s shared water resources and to offer a platform for continued dialogue.

The evening dinner included a report back from the different sessions, accompanied by 20 International Parliamentarians from the Preventive Diplomacy program of the East West Institute, who came to learn about the Good Water Neighbors project.

This was the largest single gathering ever held by the project!

You can read more about the conference on our blog page and see a short video clip of the conference where Israeli and Palestinian students from the Community GIS project presented their maps of environmental hazards in their communities.
